Erin Wallbillich, Freshman
The new year is a new start for people all around the world. Many people like to start out the new year with a bang. This includes partying, watching the ball drop, staying up late, and many other fun things. While some go out and do stuff, others stay in and spend time with family and friends. At the Pirates’ Pearl, we interviewed some students to see what they did for New Year’s Day. The students at Palisades High School have their own plans that they do on New Year's Eve into New Year’s Day. Some of these students have similar plans while others may have had special and bigger plans.
The first student we interviewed was a freshman, Averie Winsor. Averie said, “I went to New York City with Sappy (her girlfriend). We went to see the bar drop and all of the music concerts that were there. We explored the city and then when the ball dropped at midnight we kissed. It was such a fun night and was definitely one of the best moments of my life.” The New York ball drop is one of the most well-known New Year’s traditions. Every year as the clock strikes midnight, the ball on top of a building in Times Square drops. This signifies the time passing by.
The second student we interviewed was freshman Savannah Witt. Savannah said, “I spent the night in New York City in Times Square with my girlfriend. It was a magical night spent well with my family and friends. I even got in a fight with Caleb (one of Savannah’s friends) and ended up ripping his shirt. This caused him to have to go back to the hotel and watch the ball drop from there. Besides that part, I had a really fun time.” Savannah had some very interesting things happen on New Year but she had fun overall.
Another student we interviewed was freshman Rhiley Poniktera. Rhiley said, “On New Year's Eve, I had a party at my house. My family was there and we were all playing cup pong together. My crazy uncle started playing rock music and was acting like he was at a rock concert. Out of nowhere, he jumped onto the table we were playing cup pong on. He broke the table in half and made the cups go flying everywhere. The water that was in the cups went everywhere and got everyone soaked.” Rhiley had an eventful and funny beginning to 2022
Freshman Jenna Magditch said, “On the day of New Year's Eve, my family and I went to Lake Nockamixon and did the Polar Plunge challenge. I competed with my family to see who could stay in the longest, but we all barely made it past five seconds.” The Polar Plunge is a challenge when you go somewhere that has freezing cold water. You then jump in it. It is a very cold but also fun challenge and a great way to start off the new year.
Izzy Schmidt, a freshman, didn’t have very big plans the night and day of New Year. Izzy said, “On New Year’s, I did nothing besides lay in bed and fall asleep before midnight. It was boring but I did have a good nap.” Not everyone has to have huge plans for New Year’s. Izzy spent the night in bed but to her, it was a great start to a new year.
Freshman Sam Maguire didn’t have the best start to her New Year. Sam said, “I didn’t really have any plans for New Year’s so I ended up staying home. At home, I cried in the shower with my clothes on because I was upset I didn’t have any plans. But then I got a call from Rhiley and found out we were going to hang out. We ended up having a lot of fun together and I was happy I didn’t stay home all night.” Sam’s New Year started out a little rough but in the end, it ended very well with a lot of fun.
The last student interviewed was freshman Brooklynn Lucas. Brooklynn said, “I stayed up until the ball dropped and watched it with my parents and my little sister Gracie. After my little sister went to bed, I played a murder mystery game with my mom. We started playing at three in the morning and we played it until five in the morning. We ended up waking up on New Year's Day very late in the afternoon and missed most of the day.” Brooklynn had a fun time hanging out with her family and definitely had a late night.
The students at Palisades High School had some pretty unique and normal activities that they participated in going into the new year. The students we interviewed let us get an insight into the different things that people do on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.
