Sean Johnson, Senior
Are you interested in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math)? Are you looking to get more involved in the Palisades community? If so, you are in luck because Palisades’ very own Chief Science Officers just implemented the STEM Outreach Club. The Chief Science Officers (CSOs) are four upperclassmen (Amy Farese, Liam McDowell, Lizzie Gilmore, and Sean Johnson) who were chosen by the PHS Science Department to represent Palisades in the CSO International program for students in the Southeastern Pennsylvania division, which contains CSOs from various high schools in Bucks, Delaware, Chester, and Montgomery counties.
These four students were trained at the Leadership Training Institute held at Arcadia University this past August, where they heard from guest speakers in the field of STEM, networked with students from other schools, and devised an action plan that will promote STEM in the Palisades community. After these students, along with their CSO advisor, Mr. Fedell, completed their training at Arcadia, they decided to create the STEM Outreach Club at PHS to fulfill the CSO action plan.
The STEM Outreach Club meets every other Friday from 2:30-3:00 in Mr. Fedell’s room. Being one of the leaders of this club, I can say that we have made a lot of progress since the beginning of the school year. So far, we have acquired around 20 members for this club and devised several STEM-related projects to work on throughout the school year. Some of those projects include: creating a compost pile at PHS, hosting and judging science fairs and STEM nights at the elementary schools, a district-wide Earth Day tree-planting initiative, and so much more.
Talk to Mr. Fedell or contact one of the Chief Science Officers if you are interested in joining this club! Also, stay tuned for updates and events happening with this club via the PHS Morning Show, afternoon announcements, and Mr. Heffernan’s weekly emails. An Instagram account will be made for this club soon, so stay tuned!
