Tri-Lingual Holiday Party

Natalie Owens, Freshman

At Palisades High School, an important part of the school community is the abundance of optional clubs for the students to enjoy. The three language clubs, French, German, and Spanish, are a very popular choice for students looking for a fun after school extracurricular. These clubs are full of interactive activities based on the chosen language. On December 12th, 2019, the language clubs at Palisades High School came together to experience how different cultures celebrate the holidays. The Tri-Lingual Holiday Party allowed French, German, and Spanish club members to celebrate the holidays, eat delicious food, and enjoy the company of fellow language-lovers.

The Tri-Lingual Holiday Party wasn't lacking in holiday spirit! The event held many festivities for every student to get involved in throughout the afternoon, starting with caroling. Each language club rehearsed a few classic holiday songs in their language of choice and performed the songs for the other students. This gave students the opportunity to sing holiday songs for their peers and helped those in the crowd to gain knowledge on the languages of the other clubs. A popular Mexican tradition during the holidays are pinatas. If students wanted, they could take a swing at cracking open the 'Tri-Lingual Party' pinata. No one can deny that pinatas create enjoyment for any crowd! Originating in Germany, the activity of gingerbread men decorating attracted many students. Games such as inflatable reindeer antler ring toss as well as Christmas ornament decorating were also present for students to enjoy.

No matter the culture, everyone enjoys great food during the holidays. This is no exception for the holiday parties at Palisades High School. Adorned tables lined the cafeteria filled with tasty treats for everyone! Whether this be chips, fruit punch, or brownies, plenty of snacks made the Tri-Lingual Party even greater. Some students chose to take part in a cake-making contest for language students. Two French students entered wonderful Buche de Noel cakes for the contest. Another German student created a beautiful black forest cake for the occasion. Sadly, the German student wasn't there to receive her crown, but both French students accepted red crowns for partaking in the contest.

Events like the Tri-Lingual Holiday party are important for the language clubs at Palisades High School. The French, German, and Spanish clubs try to come together for parties as much as possible to celebrate many holidays, from Oktoberfest to Dia De Los Muertos. But group events like the Tri-Lingual Holiday Party give students with the common interest of dialects an opportunity to talk with each other and create friendships; celebrating the holidays along the way. This helps to culturally enrich beyond language barriers and connect people throughout the world.
