National Ugly Sweater Day falls on the 3rd Friday of December. This year it falls on December 17th, but Palisades High School is celebrating Ugly Sweater Day on the 21st.
Ugly Sweaters first started in the 50s with mass commercialization. They were called “Jingle Bell Sweaters” and weren’t intended to be “ugly;” they were actually supposed to be joyful and artistic. It became more popular on TV in the 80s. The character that popularized wearing these sweaters was Cliff Huxtable from The Cosby Show. At the end of the decade, it was a common thing for conductors of Christmas specials to wear the ugly sweaters. It wasn’t as popular during the 90s; it kind of winded down but never stopped. In the 2000s, Chris Boyd and Jordan Birch had the first Christmas ugly sweater party in Vancouver, Canada. After this party, the trend spread all over the U.S. and Canada. The parties turned into massive events most of the time for a charity. In 2007, Ugly Sweaters became more popular on social media again. Early in the 2010s, fashion designers came out with Christmas Ugly Sweater collections. It became a very common way to show your Christmas spirit. Social media has influenced this Christmas fashion trend greatly.
Some students at Palisades on the 21st wore ugly sweaters to celebrate National Ugly Sweater Day. These sweaters were Christmas themed or had Christmas characters on them. These sweaters in general also may have writing on them, but normally the writing is a play on words to fit the theme. Others may have ornaments, ribbons, bows, or lights. The goal is to make or buy a Christmas sweater that is ugly.
